Campbell Soup Cans

Last week I started a series of twelve paintings. I won’t reveal exactly what the subject is, but the series comes from a 15 minute experience I had in August of 2006. I actually started the series then, just sketching on each canvas, but shelved it until now. Now that it is revealed, I will have the impetus to complete it! Hopefully it will be one of my “Magnum Opus” to date…Warhol’s Campbell Soup series of paintings come to mind. Below is one of the almost complete paintings in the middle of the series. Anybody want to guess what the series is about??

Hollister Almost Finished

This is the painting mentioned in the previous blog from my motorcycle travels down Highway 25 south of Hollister, CA. It is just about done. I will let it sit for a week or two, and then finish a few details. Right now I am titling this “Hollister”, but might change that once it goes to a gallery. It’s a 30×40 oil on canvas.

They are growing a lot of grapes in that area now, and the green you see on the top of the distant hill are grapevines. I have some more interesting studies of these rolling grape fields, which I might do in the future.

Here is a larger jpg of the painting if interested.

A Harley, Highway 25, and a Painting

One of my favorite motorcycle rides in the bay area is Highway 25 south of Hollister, California. It is a great motorcycle road out in the middle of nowhere with wide sweeping curves and long straightaways. We usually do it 3 or 4 times a year. I have actually done several short videos on the ride you can find on youTube HERE and HERE.

The area is a constant terrain of farmlands, barns, old ranch houses, abandoned buildings and wide open spaces…a painters paradise. When we ride, it is usually a group affair and very few stops. Every time I go, I tell myself I am going to bring the RV down sometime and just paint for a few days.

On a ride we did several weeks ago, it was just Pete and me, so we stopped quite a bit so I could take pictures along the way. My pastoral scenes are becoming more popular, and I wanted to do a big California Hills type scene. Today, I started a 30×40 which is a composite of several photo studies I did on the ride. I won’t give you a day-by-day account like the last big Yosemite painting, but below are a few pictures from the ride, and the sketch in of the painting.

Above El Capitan VIII

OK, this is the last post about this painting. After I returned from the Carmel Art Festival, I realized the entire painting looked too ‘busy’, so I took out more clouds. Now there are more areas where the eye can rest. I declare it finished, but of course if it hangs around I might be tempted to touch it up here and there.

Above El Capitan VII

Some may remember late last year I was working on a large painting of El Capitan in Yosemite National Park and posting the work as it developed. (You can scroll back through this weblog and see the posts I made as the painting progressed.) I was close to finished, so stopped working on it for a few weeks and come back with a fresh eye. Well, the weeks turned into months, and I am just now coming back to it.

In the last few days, I have painted all over the canvas, mainly lightening up the distant values as they were too dark. I might lighten them up a bit more once the foreground is complete. I also eliminated some of the clouds as they were over powering the rest of the painting. I also slightly changed and worked on the foreground, with more work to do there. It is getting close to finished. Anybody have suggestions?

Plein Tahoe

Plein Tahoe

Introducing my new book, “Plein Tahoe“, which chronicles six years of painting Lake Tahoe in plein air. A section on Yosemite is also included. With over 45 full color reproductions of my paintings, the hardcover book comes with a full color dust jacket.

For those who love Lake Tahoe, Yosemite, or my work, it would make a wonderful Christmas present! Click here for more information and to preview the book.

Above El Capitan VI

Continued work yesterday and today. I put in the rest of the valley floor, with the lower right very roughly painted as much of it will be covered with foreground trees. I continued to work on the foreground, and also all over the painting, making minor adjustments, adding some scattered clouds and other details.

Normally I can do 90% of a painting this size in 3-4 days, then let it sit and occasionally make adjustments here and there over several weeks . It is also good to put it aside for awhile and then look at it with fresh eyes. This phase will start in the next day or so.

Below are two shots, one of the entire painting, and one closeup of part of the sky which shows some of the color better.

Above El Capitan V

I am still recovering from a sick spell, but spent more time today working on El Capitan than I have any day yet. At this stage, the painting becomes more fun as the highlights are starting to develop and the painting is taking on a finished look. You can probably tell from the photos below that a lot of progress was made. I worked the cliffs to the right just in front of El Capitan, more of the valley floor, and sketched in the Merced River as it flows through Yosemite Valley.

I also started some of the foreground cliffs. After some thought, I decided to lower the forground cliff where it is much less pronounced. I did this as the previous sketch boxed the viewer in. I want the eye to follow the cliff right into the middle distance and right to the light on El Capitan.

The quick snapshots I take while the painting is on the easel really wash out a lot of color, particularly the sky, where most of the grey you see is actually a bluish purple.

Below is a closeup of the right hand cliffs which show the actual color and values a little more accurately–

My goal is to get this painting about 95% complete this week. If I continue at today’s pace, I should make it!

Above El Capitan Part IV

Normally I would be finished with this painting by now, but other projects, activities, and several days of being under the weather have slowed me down. Today I finally got back to painting since mid last week.

I am still working mainly top to bottom, but since the entire painting was dry, went back over and put in more clouds and detail in places. I also worked more on the valley floor, which is primarily evergreen trees.

aboveelcapitanf.jpg

Up to this point I have not decided how the foreground cliffs will appear, so now have to decide. The reason being, I don’t want too put much detail on the valley floor directly below which will be covered by trees, etc.

El Capitan Part III

More photos as the painting progresses. I didn’t work on it a much yesterday, but continued today, although I am painting on it only 2-4 hours a day. I have put in most of El Capitan itself and the surrounding cliffs. The top half of the painting is 2/3 done. Once most of it is complete, I will add scattered clouds, etc, and give some parts more definition.

My palette here consists of: Ultramarine Blue, Cobolt Blue, Quinacridone Red, Cadmium Red Medium, Cadmium Red Dark, Sap Green, Transparent Iron Oxide, Cadmium Orange, Yellow Ochre, and Cadmium Yellow Medium. I occasionally use other colors, but this is my primary palatte.

I usually mix a combination of Ultramarine Blue and Quinacridone Red to form a purple. I also mix Cobolt Blue and Cadmium Red Dark to get a rich gray.
