Cave Rock Progress

In my last post, “From Tiny to Huge”, I mentioned I was painting my first 36×48 vertical painting, the subject being Cave Rock which towers over Lake Tahoe on the eastern shoreline. As promised, I thought I would post a status report. Below is my progress so far. Most of it is 98% complete except for the immediate bottom foreground. I debated on whether to put in the boat house and docks as they would become the center of interest. As you can see, I went ahead and put them in which I think adds a nice touch.

I am going to have to go back to painting miniatures, as they are selling quite well at the galleries. I guess my next post might be “From Huge to Tiny”!

From Tiny to Huge

I had been painting so many miniatures lately, it was time to try something a little bigger. I had been wanting to do a large work of Cave Rock which towers over Lake Tahoe. On my last visit there I went out to the east shore of the lake to take some photographs of the area in the early morning light.

I normally don’t announce paintings until they are done, as you never know how they will turn out. However, this is the first 36×48 vertical or portrait style painting I have done, so it is an entirely new experience.  A 36×48 canvas is about as large as I can comfortably handle in my studio.  I had to adjust my easel for the first time in a decade in order to be able to paint it without standing on a chair! Below is my primary study I am working from, although I am incorporating elements from other photos I have.

I’ll let you know in a week or so if it turns out!

Adding Interest

I had mentioned in my previous post about changing an older mini painting more to my liking. I had done the painting about a year ago, and even though it had great color, it looked ’empty’ and lacking ‘interest’. So, I added some buildings, a fence and a road leading into the painting. Below I have a before and after. So does the new version look better? I think so.

More Mini’s

I just switched Internet service providers so my high speed link was out for over a week. I had to go down to the local library just to check my email. Anyway, we are back up now with a faster link.

In the meantime, I have been painting a lot of miniatures. My galleries seem to sell these quite readily, and I enjoy doing them. I did 9 last week, plus changing an older one more to my liking. Below are a few, which I will be distributing to my galleries as soon as the frames come in. You can see more by clicking here. The top two rows are all new.

Sandy-by-the-Sea

I had failed to mention something in my prior post today. When I came down to Carmel for the art festival, I also brought 8 paintings down, which are now being displayed at the Carmel art gallery, Sandy-by-the-Sea. I had spoken with them the week before, and they seemed anxious to show my work, however a little short on gallery space. So, most of the works are smaller. About half are plein air and the rest studio. Below is one of the works on display there.

A Little Seascape

I did this little 6×8 seascape about a week ago, set it out to dry, and yesterday my son Justin saw it, and said, “Dad, that is a nice little painting”. He turned 18 this week. I think he has a good eye….anyway here it is—

Galerie Noir

fred_hero.jpg

I received an email last week from a partner in an art gallery at South Shore Lake Tahoe. The email, which was totally unexpected, invited me to start showing at their gallery located in the new Montbleu Resort (formerly Caesar’s Palace). He had seen my work at another gallery, James-Harold Gallery, where I show on north shore (about 40 miles away) and liked what I was doing. I checked with the owner of James-Harold Gallery if there would be any territorial issues, and he said no problem, it will probably help all my sales in the area.

After a few emails back and forth with Galerie Noir, I am tentatively going to take a load of paintings to the new gallery early April. Stay tuned for exact dates when things can be finalized and my works actual be seen.

Demo at the Los Gatos Art Association Monthly Meeting

I have just been invited to do a demonstration painting at the Los Gatos Art Association monthly meeting on March 10, 2007. The scheduled guest artist had a medical emergency, so they asked me to fill in. Prospective members and guests are welcome to this meeting which takes place from 1:00-3:00 pm. For more information click here.

I will probably demonstrate my ‘wet-into-wet’ oil painting technique I use while painting ‘en plein air’, and most of my studio work. Below is a sample seascape painted entirely on location using the technique.

Crater Lake

I didn’t do much painting over the holidays, but managed to finish a couple paintings of Crater Lake. I did a motorcycle trip last summer through Oregon, and this is one of the studio paintings from that trip.
