(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.donaldneff.com\/creeks.html\" target=\"_blank\">Click here for complete info.<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Subscribe to this blog by entering your email in the right sidebar>>>>><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>In 1769 Spanish explorer <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gaspar_de_Portol\u00c3\u00a1\" target=\"_blank\">Gaspar de Portola<\/a> hiked over a small range of coastal mountains, saw a beautiful bay, and camped under a giant redwood tree on the banks of a creek in order to explore the area further.  He called the tall redwood tree <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/El_Palo_Alto\" target=\"_blank\">El Palo Alto<\/a>, which means &#8216;tall stick&#8217; in Spanish.   The land is now called California, the mountains are now called the Santa Cruz Range, the bay is San Francisco Bay, and the creek named <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/San_Francisquito_Creek\" target=\"_blank\">San Francisquito Creek<\/a>.  Years later a town would spring up in the area named after the landmark tree, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Palo_Alto,_California\" target=\"_blank\">Palo Alto<\/a>, and a famous university called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stanford.edu\" target=\"_blank\">Stanford<\/a> started. Note how much of a landmark it was in the old days.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I did painting number Twentytwo under the same 1,035 year old redwood tree Portola camped, which still grows along the bank of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/San_Francisquito_Creek\" target=\"_blank\">San Francisquito Creek<\/a>.  It is also right next to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/El_Camino_Real_(California)\" target=\"_blank\">El Camino Real<\/a>, where the original &#8220;Kings Highway&#8221; passed connecting California&#8217;s 21 missions.  Incidently, paintings <a href=\"http:\/\/www.donaldneff.com\/blog\/seven-nuclear-heaven-eight-venture-capital-state\/\" target=\"_blank\">seven and eight were painted in Portola Valley<\/a>, named after the explorer.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Palo_Alto,_California\" target=\"_blank\">Palo Alto<\/a> could be called the birthplace of Silicon Valley.  Growing up together with bordering <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stanford.edu\" target=\"_blank\">Stanford<\/a> University, the town of about 64,000 residents has fueled the high-tech industry with it&#8217;s garage startups galore. A train trestle was built within feet of the tree and Caltrain rumbles up and down the peninsula carrying passengers to and fro.  I wanted to try to capture the tree, trestle, and creek in one small horizontal painting, no small task, especially considering the creek is in a ravine about twenty feet below. I also wanted to touch the trestle up a bit under different light and after drying a bit.
