{"id":425,"date":"2008-11-04T18:03:23","date_gmt":"2008-11-05T00:03:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.donaldneff.com\/blog\/?p=425"},"modified":"2008-11-04T18:03:23","modified_gmt":"2008-11-05T00:03:23","slug":"election-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.donaldneff.com\/blog\/election-day\/","title":{"rendered":"Election Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I awoke to the pitter-patter of rain this election day morning.\u00c2\u00a0 It rained until about 9:00 AM, then cleared off to partly cloudy skies.\u00c2\u00a0 As I headed out to the polling place around ten o&#8217;clock, the clearing skies were wonderful.\u00c2\u00a0 We were getting the billowing cumulus clouds and fresh sky which is only common here after a winter storm.<\/p>\n<p>I couldn&#8217;t resist, so after casting my ballot, I went home, ate lunch, and then headed out to the hills right behind my home to paint the wonderful sky before it was gone.\u00c2\u00a0 I took two 6&#215;8 canvas boards, one toned with my usual Transparent Iron Oxide (somewhat like a Burnt Sienna), and the other just the white canvas.\u00c2\u00a0 I wanted to see how much the toned colors would come through on the sky.<\/p>\n<p>I drove up one of the roads behind my house.\u00c2\u00a0 It was a wonderful, crisp and only slightly breezy day&#8212;<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"electionday2.jpg\" id=\"image427\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.donaldneff.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/electionday2.jpg\" \/><\/div>\n<p>I first painted towards San Jose and Silicon Valley with the sky as the center of interest.\u00c2\u00a0 Using the white canvas panel, I spent about 30 minutes on it&#8211;<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"san jose donald neff\" alt=\"san jose donald neff\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.donaldneff.com\/pleingallery\/pleinpicts\/electionday1large.jpg\" \/><\/div>\n<p>I then turned my easel around the exact opposite direction and painted the hills behind me with the clouds swirling around the tops.\u00c2\u00a0 Below is the second painting, using the toned panel.\u00c2\u00a0 Again I spent about 30 minutes on it as I wanted to capture the sky as quickly as possible.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"san jose donald neff\" alt=\"san jose donald neff\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.donaldneff.com\/pleingallery\/pleinpicts\/electionday2large.jpg\" \/><\/div>\n<p>I think I will stick with the toned panel for sky paintings, as the warmth can show through.\u00c2\u00a0 Below is a picture of my easel by the car, which I had to take with my cell phone as the camera battery had just died.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"electionday1.jpg\" id=\"image426\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.donaldneff.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/electionday1.jpg\" \/><\/div>\n<p>As I write this, I am not sure who will win the election.\u00c2\u00a0 Both my paintings, although very simple in composition, turned out to be &#8216;keepers&#8217;
