For todays post from the “Studio Oubliette” we go to the high Sierra of California. Nestled along Hwy 120 near Tioga Pass is this beautiful alpine lake. Continuing the daily diversion from the constant bad news, today’s offering from the studio ‘bridewell’ is a scene near Telluride, Colorado. The view is along Hwy 145 as you approach Telluride. This small resort/ski town has been in the virus news lately as a site where they are doing a test study of the entire population to see how many are actually exposed to covid19.

Historic California is the subject for today’s offering from the studio stockade. This is a plein air painting I did of the Mission San Juan Bautista. You might recognize it if you ever watched the Hitchcock film ‘Vertigo.’ The path is El Camino Real, the road built by the early Spanish missionaries to connect their missions. It is one of the few places you can see the original dirt avenue. It also happens to be the San Andreas Fault Line!

Back to Kobe, Japan for today’s offering from the Neff Studio ‘Pokey’. In the old sailing days, sailors from around the world loved docking in Kobe, drink the “Kobe Water”, and load it on the ships. The water was such good quality, it would not spoil even when crossing the equator. This scene is the Mentaki Waterfall, which has a small dam and intake house to supply water for Kobe, and is just a few minutes walk from the Shin-Kobe Shinkansen Station (bullet train station).

Let’s go to South America!!

Today’s offering from the studio ‘calaboose’ is Iguassu Falls in South America. Considered one of the greatest natural wonders of the world, we visited the falls in 2012. I did several studies on site, and then came back to the studio to produce my largest painting ever done. An international art magazine wrote an article about the entire experience and development of the painting…

Spring is here, but how about one last winter scene? Today’s offering is a winter scene in the high Sierra. This is a view from the Hwy 267 bridge as it crosses over the Truckee River. If you have never heard of the little town of Truckee, it is probably witness to more history in California than most small towns in the state. Today’s offering from the art ‘pokey’. I don’t do too many animal paintings, and don’t do acrylics in the studio anymore, so here is one I did quite awhile ago. It depicts an osprey overlooking a lake. Can anybody guess what lake this is? (Hint: it is in Wyoming somewhere.)

BTW, this painting hung in an overseas US Embassy for a number of years.

The waves come crashing in, pounding the narrow walls, rushing in and out creating thunderous sound. With sea spray in your face, there is nothing like standing on a bluff over the thrashing waves…especially in Big Sur, California!

Today’s offering from the studio hoosegow is another vertical water painting. This piece is a cove in Garrapata State Park, now not too far from our new home we just moved to. Be sure to click on the picture to see the entire painting.

Another painting in my annual holiday sale, Lake Tahoe is frequented by stormy weather during all seasons of the year. This piece depicts the steep eastern shoreline as a squall moves across the lake.
